Usually after a biopsy has been performed there is little bleeding. Sutures are placed and they usually dissolve on their own as the area heals. Applying pressure with gauze will help to stop any bleeding. If swelling is present, then a cold compress can be placed on the outside of the face. Warm salt water rinses will also help to keep the area clean. If you use tobacco products, they will need to be discontinued for 3 days.
Most of the time, there is some pain associated with a biopsy. This is also dependent upon the size and location of the area biopsied. Taking ibuprofen or Tylenol should help with any discomfort. We may give a prescription for pain, if it is needed.
The results from your biopsy are usually received in about 7-10 days. We will discuss the results with you and the need, if any, of any additional treatments.
